Tips tailored for Goethe B2 exam:
Understand the Expectations
Understand and have clarity about what is expected from you. B2 bedeutet, dass du die komplexen Texte zu abstrakten Themen auch ohne Mühe verstehen kannst. Außerdem hast du die Fähigkeit sicher ein alltägliches Gespräch mit Muttersprachlern zu führen.
Commit to Course Books
One can conclude from the point above that you cannot take shortcuts and you should engage with the course books (B2.1 & B2.2) with full dedication to gain the confidence to speak fluently, write efficiently and understand complex texts as well. Keep in mind, 95% of the topics are covered in the content of your course books.
Reading is the Key
Lesen alone can prepare you for all the modules. Students often don’t understand to how to approach a text. While reading you must aim to collect the Stitchworte/Stitchpunkte des Textes. Once you have the core ideas of the text you must try and summaries the text in your own words. Class discussions about different topics of these texts and listening to your classmates can help you a lot with reading. It surely helps you with vocabulary as well.
Sprechen for Confidence
Reading and expressing your thoughts out loud helps you gain confidence to speak, opportunity to use new words, and most importantly help you get familiar with the language. This repetitive exercise is training you for reading, listening, speaking and writing. It takes time and efforts initially but it’s far better than the frustration to look for word meanings again and again
Exam Preparation
Last but not least. It is always helpful to understand the exam pattern with the help of sample papers. You don’t get an entire day to provide answers of the 4 modules during exams. In first 3 sample papers you can avoid the time limit and focus only on the pattern. Once you get familiar with the nature of the Aufgabe you can start working on the time limit. If you’re scoring more than 80% in sample papers (after honest attempts) you are good to go for the exam.
Steps to curb the distractions:
Avoid Overloading with Study Material
Collecting list of topics and several kinds of study material cannot help you in your preparation. In fact, it deviates you from the straightforward path and can demotivate you looking at pile of books. Imagine taking a longer route despite GPS showing you the shorter route. Your course books are more than enough to prepare you for the topics.
Effective Vocabulary Building
Don’t make long lists of vocabulary. It is not a practical approach to write down thirty new words with their meanings every day. Imagine how scary your notes would look like at the end of the course. Go for a more practical approach and learn five new words everyday by using them in class or in your writing. Students often write the meaning in one word and never understand to how to use them correctly in context.
Understand Mistakes, Don’t Guess
Don’t guess the answers during preparation time. Spend time with each exercise of the sample paper even after solving it. In case of incorrect answers, seek out the underlying reasons for them. For example, repeatedly listen to that specific part of the audio until you grasp your mistakes in Hörverstehen.
